Turning off the methane emissions tap

There are 51 billion tonnes of greenhouse gases being pumped into the air by people every year. Three billion are from methane escaping from water. We develop technologies to remove methane from water permanently. Join us on the journey to capture the first billion.

Our vision is to remove methane from water and to use this captured methane as a new source of renewable energy.

Sources of greenhouse gases

Carbon dioxide has been well mapped for a long time. Sources of methane are only starting to be fully understood.

How is methane released to the atmosphere from water?

Microbes break down organic material that contains carbon. Without much oxygen, this process produces methane. This methane is transferred to our atmosphere through three different processes.

There are three key sources of methane from water that we need to address

Hydropower reservoirs

Hydropower dam

Hydropower is critical for the renewable energy transition.

It will remain the world’s largest source of renewable electricity generation, playing a vital role in decarbonising the global energy system.

One billion tonnes of greenhouse gases originate from freshwater reservoirs.

Water treatment

Reservoirs, wastewater and water treatment systems are responsible for over a billion tonnes of greenhouse gasses escaping into the atmosphere each year.

Solving this challenge for our water systems is at the heart of adaptation to climate change.

Rice cultivation

Rice grows mostly in flooded fields called rice paddies. The water blocks oxygen from penetrating the soil. This creates perfect conditions for bacteria that release methane.

Growing rice in flooded conditions is a significant contributor to global atmospheric methane emissions.

We develop breakthrough technologies to capture methane from water to prevent its escape to the atmosphere. We use this methane to generate a new source of biofuel.

Measure

Our intelligent platform measures and monitors methane emissions to provide a financial value for this resource.

Capture

We deploy our methane capturing technologies to prevent atmospheric methane emissions.

Generate

We generate a new source of bioenergy and income from captured methane.

Our methane capture technology

There is no solution for removing methane from water at scale. Until now. Think of our patent pending technology as a Dyson vacuum cleaner, however, instead of separating dirt particles from air, Bluemethane methane capture technology separates methane from water.
